The Fifer by Edouard Manet came about by Manet travelling to Spain and visiting the Prado and viewing Diego Velazquez’s work. He loved it so much he used his own vision to work his painting The Fifer. The Background behind The Fifer hardly changes color from background to floor. Manet makes the boy into a Spanish Regiment Fifer and paints him with very little strokes to define parts of him. He also uses a small color palette of Black Red and White which brings the boy forward being so much more important, strong and alive. Of course the Old Guard hated it. It is now at the Musee d’Orsay. Click to see.
